I have no doubt that most people look forward to the arrival of December what with all the festivities surrounding Christmas. While we do enjoy Christmas, the month of December leading up to it in our house is usually quite hectic and can be a bit stressful at times.
First and foremost, we have not one, but both kids birthdays in the month. Therefore our priority is to plan out their birthday celebrations. We always want to make sure that they still feel their birthdays are special, and not get overshadowed by the upcoming Christmas. The trick usually is trying to coordinate everyone’s busy December schedule in order to find a date/time for the whole family to get together. Once that’s set, then it’s a mad dash to setup their birthday/Christmas wish lists, shop for birthday gifts as well as Christmas presents for the rest of the family. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime though I did almost miss the deadline for the guarantee delivery before Christmas Eve this year. Taking about cutting it close!
The kids (more specifically the Girl) decided to throw me some extra work this year however. She’s been begging to have a ‘friends’ birthday party for months on end because it was 3 years ago when they had one. We know that a LOT of their friends from school get a ‘friends’ party every year, but in all honesty it is so expensive, especially for us since how can you give a ‘friends’ party to one kid but not the other, right? In the end, we reluctantly agreed since the Boy was turning 10 this year so it was kind of more ‘special’. They got to invite some of their closest friends from school for an exciting joint laser-tag party.
Additionally, I put together an annual holiday card and year-end letter to be sent out to family and friends. And for some reason I just could not get this project started early enough every year, and thus usually end up trying to cram it in during the first couple of weeks in December.
I also create a picture calendar as part of a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law as well as for myself each year. And just like the holiday card/letter, this project also end up competing for my time in the first half of December. With all of this going on, on top of still needing to keep up with work and the ‘regular’ stuff, I hope that you could see why by this point I am SOOOO ready to be done with any and all activities! (Although as I am writing this, I just remembered that since I was so late in getting my Christmas shopping done that I am still waiting for them to be delivered. This means gift wrapping until the very last second for me! wahhhhh)
So yes, I usually tend to look forward to the day AFTER Christmas, when everything is all said and done and I can finally breathe again. But please don’t let me dampen your holiday spirit. I do sincerely wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a very happy new year!
